For More Information, Visit magcloud.com.

Create
The publisher creates a magazine in a design program. Any program that can put out a letter-sized (8.5" x 11.0"), multi-page PDF will work.
Upload
The publisher uploads the PDF to MagCloud, fills out the description, and orders a proof. At this point, no one can see it besides the publisher.
Proof
MagCloud prints, binds, and mails the proof to the publisher. Proofs can take up to 2 weeks to arrive, though most arrive faster.
Publish
The publisher reviews the proof. If changes are needed, the publisher can upload a new PDF and order another proof. The publisher marks the issue as “published” and sets the price. MagCloud charges 20 cents per page, and the publisher specifies any markup above that.
Buy & Sell
When the issue is published, people can buy it on the MagCloud website. Buyers will need to have a credit card or PayPal account to buy. At this time orders can only be shipped to the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, but we'll be expanding to more countries soon.
Print & Mail
When someone buys an issue, MagCloud prints, binds, and mails it to the buyer. Or send an order to an entire group of people using our unique Ship to Group capability. Orders can take up to 2 weeks to arrive, though most arrive faster.
Publishers Get Paid
Publishers can check their sales online at any time. Once a month, MagCloud pays publishers any collected royalties via PayPal.

Is This the Future of Magazines?

Spring is Here! In our very narrow market, foodservice equipment and supplies, manufacturer sales will continue to decline moderately again in 2010. But many of our customers are beginning to return or ramp up, as they see success has become a market-share game. Our biennial chain meeting in February ’10, MUFES, is actually trending ahead of ’08 in terms of end-user attendance and sponsorships. I just think people want to get back to work and get what’s out there.

The Great Recession has made our customers more open to new products, especially video, so we’re working at rebuilding our Web site in ’10 to get all the new tools. But for most customers, the downturn has not undercut their acceptance of our core print products. They still see the value of print for building brand equity. We’ll just make sure we have all the ways to get our customers to their biggest buyers.

Click Here to view other magazine publishing predictions for 2010

Lead Generation More Important Than Ever

Media challenges for lead-gen practitioners
Lead Generation Guide 2009

Ellis Booker, editor, BtoB
The emphasis on lead generation we saw last year has continued and, in fact, accelerated. IPA Publishing Services has been partnering with this award winning publication since 2002 and we are pleased to be associated with the staff and management of this award winning publication.

Metropolis examines contemporary life through design—architecture, interior design, product design, graphic design, crafts, planning, and preservation. Subjects range from the sprawling urban environment to intimate living spaces to small objects of everyday use. In looking for why design happens in a certain way, Metropolis explores the economic, environmental, social, cultural, political, and technological context. With its innovative graphic presentation and its provocative voice, Metropolis shows how richly designed our world can be.

Metropolis has won many awards over the years. Most recently, the magazine was the recipient of the 2009 Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects and in 2008 it was awarded Architecture Magazine of the Year by the International Design Awards.

Click here to view Metropolis Magazine Online

Maria Rodale: Why Magazines Won’t Die

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 155px; height: 155px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_d8qSYY3uQ38/S38BSvcThiI/AAAAAAAAAIs/Jqo0AlBqFvI/s200/6a00d83451ea9369e2011572507818970b-800wi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440068296371308066" />
Maria Rodale, CEO and Chairman of Rodale Inc., published an article in FOLIO about why she thinks magazines won’t die:

“The Internet is a technology that enables people to go out in SEARCH of things. Johnson, M.B.A., Ph.D.

Perhaps you set some New Year’s goals but are already finding it difficult to follow them. That’s no surprise. Setting goals is easy—it’s sticking to the plan to attain those goals that is difficult.

There’s great reason to set goals (and then follow through on them). Years ago, studies conducted on Harvard University graduates showed that students who set career goals earned three times as much income as their peers who failed to plan. The majority of top producers use written business and marketing plans, as opposed to less than 10 percent of the lowest-producing advisors. As J.C. Penney once said, “Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I will give you a man who will make history. Give me a man without a goal and I will give you a stock clerk.”

But the reality is that it’s tough to change. Chances are you’re still pretty much the way you were five years ago, except for the new clothes you’re wearing and your hair style. Recidivism—prisoners going back to prison within five years of getting out—is a whopping 85 percent nationwide. The divorce rate for second marriages is significantly higher than it is for first marriages. Is prison so much fun that felons are dying to go back? Is divorce more enjoyable the second time around? Of course not! It’s just tough to change. No wonder it’s so difficult to make the really important changes required to achieve our goals.

YOU CAN’T ACHIEVE A GOAL WITHOUT CHANGING SOME ASPECT OF YOUR BUSINESS OR PERSONAL LIFE.

What it takes
There’s more to achieving your goals than simply deciding that you will. Here are three keys to achieving your goals this year.

Be specific. Years ago, I asked a salesperson I was coaching to name a goal that would motivate him. He said “to be happy.” Then I asked him how he would know when he achieved that goal. He just shrugged his shoulders.

Nebulous goals like “happiness” only serve to frustrate us. Varying degrees of happiness fade in and out daily. I told the salesperson to come up with three specific achievements that would contribute to his sense of happiness. He said, “A Mercedes 560 SL, $100,000 in liquid investments, and to be home at 5 p.m. daily so I can play with my kids.” I then asked him to set dates when he would like to achieve these objectives. When he set dates, the goals became real.

If you haven’t set any goals yet for 2010, make sure the objectives you establish are very specific. If you have already worked on your business plan, make sure your goals aren’t nebulous. They should be measurable. It should be easy to visualize exactly what they are and when you want to achieve them.

Create short-term and mid-term objectives that tie to long-term goals.Your primary goals should be long-term tangible dreams with a timeframe of one to five years. These could be buying a vacation home in Vail, taking a month-long trip around the world, working only two days a week and doing charity work. Try to focus on the deeper reasons behind your numerical or financial goals because those reasons will motivate you more effectively than an otherwise isolated number.

Now, for each primary long-term goal, work backward and set a mid-term goal that can be achieved in one month to a year. This could be doubling your annuity sales from referrals or gaining 15 clients from a new marketing program with a strategic partner. The mid-term goal objective should be a stepping stone to hitting the long-term dream.

Finally, work backward once again from the mid-term goal and set short-term objectives. Short-term objectives are things you want to accomplish today or this week. For example, you may want to ask three clients for introductions before you go to lunch today, or complete the mailing for the marketing program by the end of this week.

This level of specificity really does work. The advisors who are best at setting objectives work to achieve their goals by the day, and often by the hour. They do what they said they’d do or they don’t allow themselves to go home. They are committed to and focused on achieving the goals by the date they want them.

Keep your goals “top of mind.” People are visual creatures. As children, we put posters or photographs of people we looked up to as “heroes” on our bedroom walls: Superman, Batman, rock stars and sports heroes.

We need to do the same thing to visualize our goals: Put a picture, poster, advertisement or some other tangible reminder of your objective at a spot you will look at several times during the day to remind you what it is you’re working toward.

Lastly, come to terms with how your priorities may need to change in order to achieve your goal. H.L. Hunt, the late great Texas oil and ketchup tycoon, was once asked to reveal the secret of his success. “Decide what you want,” he replied, “but also decide what you will do to get it.”

You can’t achieve a goal without changing some aspect of your business or personal life. What are you willing to sacrifice to get what you desire?

Kerry Johnson, M.B.A, Ph.D., is an author and speaker at financial-planning and insurance conferences. The Tabbies, the editorial and design awards program run by Trade, Association and Business Publications International (TABPI), is again partnering with New Zealand's Magazine Publishers Association (MPA); Australia's Society of Editors NSW; South Africa's Magazine Publisher's Association of South Africa (MPASA), TABPI South Africa and the Southern African Freelancers Association (SAFREA); and the U.S.-based American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE).

Paul J. Heney, TABPI President, said that entrants may be looking to capitalize on what has been a rough year.

“I think a lot of editors are very proud that they did great work in spite of the economic difficulties that surrounded them. It was an opportunity for so many publications to take a leadership role and show their industries how to get through the downturn,” Heney said. “Plus, I think that many people are eager to recognize their staff’s hard work, especially after what we’ve all been through over the past 16 months.”

The Tabbies international b2b magazine competition encompasses 20 categories, and is open to English-language business-to-business publications around the world that are published at least quarterly, as well as b2b online-only publications. Unlike some more restrictive programs, publications are not required to maintain membership in any particular organizations in order to be considered for the Tabbies.

Categories in the Tabbies' editorial division include: Best Single Issue, Department, Editor's Column, Feature Article, Focus/Profile Article, How-To Article, News Coverage, Regular Column, Single News Article, Special Section, and Technical Article. Categories in the design division include: Feature Design, Front Cover, Digital Imagery; Front Cover, Illustration; Front Cover, Photograph; Front Cover, Special Issue; Opening Page or Spread; and Table of Contents. The online division recognizes the most interactive, informative b2b websites as well as online-only features.

The 2010 Tabbies are also supported by companies that have an interest in working with b2b editors and publishers -- as well as supporting editorial and design excellence. Your support of them is most appreciated. The Gold Sponsors for the 2010 Tabbies are Proximity Marketing and Foster Printing Service. An editable entry form is located here. Judges for the competition will be culled from suggestions of regional editorial groups across the globe. Giving them a custom professional reprint of your positive press in a leading industry publication is a great "show and tell" piece. It shows the prospect that the media has high regard for your company and its products or services and it tells them all about it in a respected publication. Nothing succeeds like success and a feature story in your industry trade press reinforces your position as a successful organization and may just help close the sale.

Why Magazine Publishers Outsource Reprints

Publishers who decide to outsource their reprint function do so for a variety of reasons. For many, selling, servicing and managing the details of a professional reprint program is not one of their core competencies. The time and effort it takes to launch and manage a reprint program can be a distraction. Publishers are busy publishing the magazine and selling advertising space. This leaves precious little time to focus on reprints.

Another factor influencing the decision to outsource is that reprints don't sell themselves. The old saying "unseen, untold is unsold is true for reprints. Reprint buyers need to be educated on the value of reprints in the marketing mix. And since many publishers do not aggressively promote reprints in the pages of their magazines, it takes a dedicated sales effort to show and tell reprint prospects how to use reprints effectively.

Outsourcing reprints isn't for everybody. Not all publishers view reprints as a source of revenue. Some publishers use reprints as a way to enhance relationships with authors and regular contributors and so give them away free of charge.

In summary, if the content in your magazine is perceived to be a strong implied endorsement of your subjects product, service or cause and if you are inclined to want to create an additional profit center, working with a professional reprint provider on a profit share basis, could be the right move.
Print Still Viable For Magazine Reprints

While Digital technology has revolutionized the printing and publishing industry, print is not going away anytime soon. This is true across many market segments including custom professional magazine reprints used as marketing and sales tools.

High quality Digital E-prints that are customized and personalized for web posting need not eliminate print, but rather they can be used in combination with print to reach the marketers target audience.

For instance printed custom reprints along with a brochure or other marketing piece could be sent to a prospective customer immediately after a face to face meeting with the propsect by the salesperson. This procedure reinforces the sales call with something tangible the prospect can touch and feel.Printed reprints also work well at trade shows where prospects might not have quick access to your web site.

On the other hand you don't want to miss an opportunity to communciate electronically through E-mail and web postings. A professional web site and access to E-mail is absolutely essential if you want to be perceived as a professional.

To summarize, it's not one or the other when it comes to traditional print or digital. It's about how to use both to your best advantage.

Don't Give Away Your Content

While the following story refers primarily to digital content and the need to monetize online content...in view of the downturn in ad sales, don't miss out on the income opportunities available through the sale of custom editorial reprints. Most publishers offer reprints; some aggressively and for profit, and others somewhat reluctantly or not at all. Those with marketable content often don't have a dedicated staff member with the time or inclination to respond to inbound requests in a timely manner.

This is where a reprint service can add value. A service will take care of sales, production, shipping and collection of payment and pay you a percentage of the selling price. The only involvement by the publisher is to provide the reprint company with the page files. The service does the rest and the publisher receives a check every time an order is processed.

Quote of the Week

I wanted to be an editor or a journalist, I wasn't really interested in being an entrepreneur, but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going.
Richard Branson - Entrepreneur -

What to Expect From a Reprint Service, Part 1 of a 3 Part Series

Outsourcing the reprint function to a third party is an excellent way to generate ancillary income without any investment of time, effort or money on the publishers part. You simply authorize a reprint company to resell your copyright protected content and they do the rest. Each month you receive a check for your share of the profit on each order. The reprint company covers all the expenses from sales, customer service, distribution and collection of payment.

If you decide that outsourcing reprints is right for you, look for the following attributes when choosing a reprint partner:

1. Look for a partner with longevity in the business. This is important because the entry barriers into the business are very low and almost anyone can "hang out their shingle". Longevity means the reprint partner understands the nuances of the business , is well versed on the publishing, production and sales and marketing side. The experienced reprint company appreciates the importance of the reprint buyer, not only to them but to the publisher as well.

2. Ask for and check references. A reprint company should be eager to furnish you with references as well as the length of time they have been working with the publishers.

3. Beware of reprint companies who overstate what they can do in terms of dollar volume. Some firms will over commit in order to land the publishers' business and then not deliver. Collaborate with the reprint company and jointly decide what a realistic goal should be.

4. Watch out for "shelving". This happens when a reprint company decides that because your magazine isn't paying off for them, they toss it on the shelf and stop making outbound contacts. If the phone rings they'll jump right on it, but this violates your agreement. An honest company will keep you informed and let you know they are having problems and bring you into the discussion on how to proceed.

To be continued

Plastic Logic Set To Debut Mobile E-Reader

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 194px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_d8qSYY3uQ38/SpAB_FT0DHI/AAAAAAAAAHc/Q_BMzjGUWS0/s200/box_btm.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372796538721668210" />
Plastic Logic is set to launch its new e-reader in early 2010 designed specifically for the needs of the mobile business professional. But, like the publishers of FORBES, O and Rolling Stone, I’m now a magazine publisher.
It all began the day I met Udi Chatow, part of the MagCloud project team at Hewlett-Packard. We were attending the annual HP TechCon symposium. Udi told me how MagCloud enables anyone to publish a magazine. The team were looking for non-profit associations to test the service. As the President of the non-profit Northern California National Speakers Association I knew our association needed a showcase for members’ articles about public speaking. Within a few short weeks we had selected five articles, sourced some illustrations from a stock photo website and, with design help from Meghan Kennedy in HP Labs, created the inaugural edition. Professionally Speaking is a 20-page color magazine that’s available for purchase from magcloud.com. Best of all, there was none of the up-front cost associated with printing.
We announced the Summer 2008 edition of Professionally Speaking on June 13, 2008.

MagCloud is a new business incubation resulting from collaboration between HP Labs and HP’s Corporate Ventures team. It’s where the world wide web meets the world of printing. MagCloud offers publishers the ability to take digitized magazines and economically promote, sell, print and fulfill them on demand.
It costs you nothing to publish a magazine on MagCloud.com. The service lets you upload a high-resolution PDF and MagCloud takes care of the rest: printing, mailing, subscription management and more. The MagCloud website functions as a virtual newsstand, where readers can browse and, using PayPal or a credit card, order publications. The publisher specifies a markup on each copy sold, which MagCloud collects and pays the publisher at the end of each month.
MagCloud uses HP Indigo digital press technology to custom-print each issue when it’s ordered. Printing on demand means no big print runs, which means no pre-publication expense. The resulting magazines are in gorgeous full color on 80lb paper.
This is a breakthrough for niche publications – the small ‘zines’ which form the long tail of the magazine publishing world. It’s also an interesting opportunity for large publishers. They are now free to experiment and create riskier products and see if they can find an audience.

For more information go to magcloud.com.
